Nuclear Jaundice and Deafness

“…That the cochlear nuclei may be damaged in kernicterus has been noted by a number of authors (Beneke, 1907 ;Esch, 1908 ;Potter, 1947 ;Bertrand, 1946 ;and Dereymaeker, 1949). Many others (Orth, 1875 ;Schmorl, 1903 ;Pfannenstiel, 1908 ;Pfaltzer, 1915 ;Ylppo, 1918 ;Palm, 1919 ;Hawkesley and Lightwood, 1934 ;Forster and McCormack, 1944;Stiller, 1947 ;and Becker and Vogel, 1948) have noted icteric pigmentation of the floor of the fourth ventricle and the underlying cranial nerve nuclei.…”
