“…Wood exposed outdoors ‘weathers to a grey colour and becomes rougher as it checks and earlywood erodes’ (Feist and Hon 1984). The erosion of wood during weathering has been measured using light microscopy and laser profilometry (Browne 1960; Black and Mraz 1974; Feist and Mraz 1978; Feist and Hon 1984; Schulz, Schöppler and Böhner 1984; Sell and Feist 1986; Arnold and Dost 1990; Feist, Rowell and Ellis 1991; Arnold, Lemaster and Dost 1992; Williams, Knaebe, Evans and Feist 2001a, 2001b, 2001c, 2011d). These studies have examined the effects of the following factors on the erosion of wood during weathering: wood species, growth rate, and density; weathering method (natural vs. artificial); chemical treatments; time of exposure, orientation (N, S, E, W) and angle of inclination (0°, 45°, 90°); and surface texture and grain orientation (radial vs. tangential longitudinal).…”
