This paper presents a networkability maturity model as an approach to assess a health care organisation's capacity with regards to being able to efficiently engage in business relationships. Continuously rising costs and increasingly restrained budgets for health care put pressure on the public health systems. A low division of labour and integration of processes along cross-organisational patient therapy provides large potential for improvements in efficiency and efficacy. It is the aim of the presented model to enable identification of potentials for improvements and respective measures to advance the ability to benefit from specialisation and collaboration along the value chain. The presented model is developed based on a classification of related state-of-the-art in maturity models to assess individual factors of networkability which are integrated to form an overall framework comprising six components and respective factors to be assessed. As networkability maturity addresses the interrelation of strategy, organisational design and information systems design, the paper adheres to requirements for effective design science research applied to the process of construction of a networkability maturity model applicable for health care providers. It therefore concludes with a case-based evaluation according to the design research literature and identification of further research.

E-health basically comprises health services and information delivered or enhanced through the Internet and related technologies (Eysenbach, 2001). The future healthcare system and its services, enabling e-health, are based on the communication between all information systems of all participants of an integrated treatment. Connecting the elements of each healthcare system (general practitioners, hospitals, health insurance companies, pharmacies, and so on)—even across national boarders—is an important issue for information systems research in healthcare. Current developments, such as upcoming or already-deployed electronic healthcare chip cards (that are to be used across Europe), show the need for Europe-wide standards and norms (Schweiger, Sunyaev, Leimeister, & Krcmar, 2007). In this article, we first outline the advantages of the standards, and then describe their main characteristics. After the introduction of communication standards, we present their comparison with the aim to support the different functions in the healthcare information systems. Subsequently, we describe the documentation standards, and discuss the goals of existing standardization approaches. Implications conclude the article.

A complex electronic patient record was implemented in an interdisciplinary pain clinic. The goal was to create a tool that would allow structured access to the entries made by all specialty groups and permit data analysis for statistical and scientific purposes by means of integrated, coded fields. An electronic workflow was developed to facilitate the processing of documents. All entries dictated were converted to digital form and recorded directly into the electronic chart. Additional features included a structured medication list and a connection to the hospital's pre-existing electronic records. The various elements to be included in the chart were determined by an interdisciplinary team and progressively implemented using a commercially available system as a basis. In conclusion, implementation of a complex electronic patient record provides a valuable instrument for quality control, interdisciplinary collaboration and improved efficiency in a large, multimodal pain clinic.
