Modeling the Mobile Radio Channel by Echo Estimation

The mobile radio channel is usually described by the GWSSUS model which is based on the physical properties of wave propagation in cellular mobile radio. Most channel simulators rely on this model. Up to now the model parameters were always chosen in a heuristic manner. This paper deals with methods to estimate the parameters of the GWSSUS model from the results of field propagation measurements. The path delays are determined by estimating the parameters of undamped complex sinusoidal functions of the frequency from a set of finite length noisy sample sequences. For this purpose a new criterion for estimating the number of complex sinusoids in noise is introduced. In delay estimation a new solution for the matrix pencil problem offers better statistical performance and lower computational complexity than polynomial methods and than the original matrix pencil concept. The excellent performance of the parameter estimation scheme is demonstrated by some application examples. Übersicht: Üblicherweise wird der Mobilfunkkanal durch das GWSSUS-Modcl beschrieben, das sich aus den physikalischen Eigenschaften der Wellenausbreitung im zellularen Mobilfunk ableitet. Die meisten Kanalsimulatorcn arbeiten auf der Grundlage dieses Modells. Bis heute wurden die in Simulationen verwendeten Modcllparametcr heuristisch gewählt. Der vorliegende Aufsatz beschäftigt sich mit Methoden, die es ermöglichen, die Parameter des GWSSUS-Modells aus den bei Ausbrcitungsmessungcn anfallenden Daten zu schätzen. Die Pfadlaufzcitcn werden bestimmt, indem die Parameter komplexer, ungedämpft schwingender Frequenzfunktionen aus einer Anzahl von gestörten Folgen spektraler Abtastwerte geschätzt werden. Zu diesem Zweck wird ein neues Kriterium zur Bestimmung der Anzahl komplexer Schwingungen in Rauschen eingeführt. Bei der Laufzeitschätzung bietet eine neue Lösung der Matrizcn-Schar-Aufgabe sowohl im Vergleich zur gebräuchlichen Lösung als auch zu Polynom-Methoden bessere statistische Eigenschaften bei geringerem Rcchenaufwand. Die ausgezeichnete Qualität des Parameter-Schätzverfahrens wird durch einige Anwcndungsbeispiclc verdeutlicht.
