“…Due to the age polyethism that is partially responsible for differentiation of tasks within a colony, hygropreference of social insects could vary according to age. Workers of 3 and 6 days old are normally involved in cell cleaning and brood tending respectively (Lindauer, 1952) and these age groups may respond differently to a humidity gradient. Freshly emerged workers from a single colony were therefore maintained in hoarding cages for 3 or 6 days and then tested for hygropreference (N = 8 colonies tested per age) to determine whether age influences worker behaviour in a humidity gradient.…”

“…Since 6-day-old workers are more likely to perform tasks related to brood care (Lindauer, 1952), we did not test the hygropreference of 3-day-old workers in the presence of brood. We monitored the behaviour of 6-day-old workers exposed to eggs and larvae.…”

“…They start with the cleaning of cells when they are just emerged, continue with the nursing of brood and later are responsible for the storing of nectar and pollen. The most dangerous task, foraging, is undertaken by the oldest bees in the colony (Rösch, 1925(Rösch, ,1930Lindauer, of certain ages do typically exhibit consistent sets of tasks. The temporal changes in labour activities of the workers correlate to the spatial shift from the central broodnest to the outside of the hive (Sakagami, 1953;Seeley, 1982).…”

“…Navigating animals explore the environment for safe return to an important place (e.g., a nest site) and to travel between places [4]. Flying central-place foragers like honeybees (Apis mellifera) extend their exploration into distances from which the features of the nest cannot be directly perceived [5][6][7][8][9][10]. Bees perform short-range and long-range orientations flights.…”
