Eight‐year follow up of a case of persistent polyclonal B cell lymphocytosis: Immunophenotypic findings pre‐ and postsplenectomy

Abstract: Persistent polyclonal B cell lymphocytosis (PPBL) is a rare condition of unknown etiology characterized by a stable and chronic increase in circulating B lymphocytes, which can have indented or double nuclei and are characterized in flow cytometry by CD19, CD20, CD27, IgM, and IgD expression, a phenotype associated with memory B cells of the marginal zone compartment. In addition, the κ to λ ratio is normal. The

“…Persistent polyclonal B cell lymphocytosis (PPBL) is characterized by a stable and chronic increase in circulating B lymphocytes, which can have indented or double nuclei and with an expanded central memory B cell phenotype. The report from Tavarozzi et al describing an extended follow-up of a case of PPBL, pre-and postsplenectomy, is noteworthy given the lack of publications related to this topic (Tavarozzi et al, 2021). Results from both the flow cytometric and histopathological analysis for this patient indicated pathological features confirming splenic involvement in the PPBL, and thus influenced the therapeutic strategy, which included splenectomy.…”

“…The manuscript from Göçer and Kurto glu additionally highlights the impact of the cutoff values on the COU (Göçer & Kurto glu, 2021). Four Case Reports are also included in this issue (Smith et al, 2021;Sorigue et al, 2021;Tavarozzi et al, 2021;Vittoria et al, 2021). The general take home message from the case reports is the need to fully investigate anomalous findings.…”
