Eight Items to Check on a Temporal Bone CT-Scan

Abstract: Imaging data provided by computed tomography scans of the temporal bone are fundamental for both the diagnosis and treatment of diseases affecting this complex structure. Despite its importance, the expertise required to analyze this exam is seldom properly acquired as it is time-consuming and often neglected among young doctors and even otolaryngologists. Physicians may not even have a look at the scans but rely only on radiology reports. Radiologists, on the other hand, may not describe the individual scans … Show more

“…CT imaging has also been instrumental in analyzing anatomical variations in the nose and paranasal sinuses, highlighting its significance in capturing fine bone architecture and soft tissue structures (Makhdoomi et al, 2021). Furthermore, the use of CT scans for temporal bone analysis has been emphasized in the literature, indicating its crucial role in providing detailed and accurate imaging for diagnostic and surgical purposes (Polanski et al, 2018).…”

“…Therefore, the use of deep learning algorithms may help in detecting subtle otosclerotic foci in routine HRCT scans [ 25 ]. Another solution would be to include the antefenestral region in all structured HRCT reports and check lists [ 26 , 27 ], which will drive readers to address the presence versus absence of otosclerosis in all scans.…”

“…The multiplanar reconstruction (Axial, coronal and sagittal view) helps surgeon to identify the anatomical and pathological overview of the temporal bone, thus it assists surgeon to plan the surgery. [1][2][3] Since there is difficulty in identifying the different structures of temporal bone while reading the HRCT of temporal bone, so we developed our own Dhulikhel Hospital Checklist protocol for evaluation of Temporal bone CT scan prior surgery. (Table 1) We hope this protocol will help every otologist to read CT scan without any difficulty.…”
