EIA Study to Identify Effect of Gas Flaring on Rice Cultivation in Oil Fields of Assam

Abstract

Oilfield in Assam are located in and around the rice fields. Rice crop in the vicinity of flare pits near oil collecting stations (OCS) get illuminated throughout and high spikelet sterility is caused. In the present study, attempt is being made to determine the response of some traditional and modern cultivars of different duration groups under prolonged photoperiod near the pit. Photoperiod insensitive medium duration variety like Jaya was least affected the light intensity. Due to prolong light hours, days to 50% flowering were affected in traditional long duration variety. Amongst the yield attributing characters, ear bearing tillers/hill, sterility (%), panicle length and grains/panicle were effected due to prolonged light hours; while light period had little effect or no effect on plant height, total number of tillers/hill and test weight.
