Abstract

This article is the result of a study into the concept of "egoless care" coined by Gerritsen and its capabilities for PYCH. Egoless care builds on a paradigm of indirect makeability; families and communities are mobilized to make a plan themselves, professionals support and encourage this process. Egoless care provides the opportunity to take a different approach of referring children, youth and families to specialized care and to reduce medicalization in preventive youth health care practices. The concept of egoless care refers, however, to a classic care practice and must be tailored to the preventive nature of PYHC. An orientation on egoless care means a lesson in humility; it brings a critical stance to all forms of normalization and control the State imposes via PYHC practices.
