Egg Quality Parameters, Production Performance and Immunity of Laying Hens Supplemented with Plant Extracts

Abstract: This study examined the effects of Mentha arvensis (MA) and Geranium thunbergii (GT) extracts in drinking water on the production performance, egg quality, cholesterol content of egg yolk, proximate composition, and sensory qualities of egg and immunity parameters in laying hens. Ninety-six 28-week-old Hy-Line Brown layers were randomly divided into four dietary treatments for 16 weeks. The dietary treatments were (1) control, (2) T1 (0.01% 1 MA:1 GT), (3) T2 (0.05% 1 MA:1 GT), and (4) T3 (0.1% 1 MA:1 GT). Egg… Show more

“…The similar trend observed on the eggshell weight showing a slight improvement with dietary inclusion of COLM could therefore be an indication that calcium absorption and utilization, rather than being compromised in the laying hens, was improved with dietary COLM inclusion. These findings corroborated with earlier studies that the herbs included did not affect the egg quality in laying hens (Aro et al, 2009;Dilawar et al, 2021;Adli, 2021).…”

“…The weight of the whole egg is obtained on a precision scale. The volume of the egg was calculated by the following formula: 0.913 W. Where W is the weight of the whole egg (Dilawar, 2021).…”

“…Therefore, the nutrients absorption enhancement mainly promoted the egg production elevation without affecting the weight and the quality of eggs. Similar situation have been observed by dietary supplementation Mentha arvensis and Geranium thunbergii , which improve egg production and keep egg quality as normal ( Dilawar et al, 2021 ). Furthermore, based on numerous components belong to phytoestrogen, E. ulmoides is a rich source of estrogen receptor modulators ( Yao et al, 2007 ).…”

“…Understanding the baseline and evolution of gut microbiota in laying hens throughout the course of their lives was crucial to obtaining optimal performance and gut health. According to new research, supplementing natural plant extracts enhances laying hen performance and egg quality while also modifying the gut microbiome (Kim et al, 2018;Abad et al, 2020;Dilawar et al, 2021).…”
