EGG – GALLERY LENGTH RELATIONSHIP AND WITHIN-TREE ANALYSES FOR THE SOUTHERN PINE BEETLE, DENDROCTONUS FRONTALIS (COLEOPTERA: SCOLYTIDAE)

Abstract: The within-sample distributions of gallery length (GL) and egg (E) density as well as their functional relationships to the infested bole were studied in an epidemic population of the southern pine beetle in southeast Texas.A least-squares linear regression analysis through the origin showed an average of 1.59 eggs per centimeter of gallery. GL accounted for 81% of the variation in E and thus is useful for estimating egg numbers. The density of attacking adults is unsatisfactory for predicting E.GL and E are u… Show more

“…Similar linear relationships between the egg gallery length and the number of egg niches (= eggs) are also found in some bark beetles (e.g. Foltz et al, 1976;Anderbrant, 1990;Zhang et al, 1992), where the gallery length was used as an indirect index showing expected amounts of food resource such as surrounding phloem tissues for larval development.…”

“…2c). As usual for D. frontalis (Foltz et al 1976), the length of oviposition gallery was strongly and linearly related to the number of offspring: offspring = 0.61 cm + 0.08, r 2 =0.68 (or about 1 egg per 1.6 cm of oviposition gallery). Therefore, beetles that came in at the middle of the attack sequence also produced the most total offspring per capita (F=17.93, df=3,96, P<0.0001; Fig.…”

“…For the reasons discussed by Coulson et al in press, andFoltz et al (1976), we believe that the functional relationship of within-tree larval populations and SH/IBH is most meaningfully represented by the raw data. “…As has been pointed out previously (Coulson et al in press, and 1976;Foltz et al 1976) it is common practice among biologists to average or compress data in studies of this type in order to simplify analyses. The density dropped abruptly from this point to the base of the infestation and gradually towards the top.…”
