Egg:embryo weight ratio as an indicator of dwarfism induced by infectious bronchitis virus

Abstract: A simple objective method to quantify embryo dwarfism induced by infectious bronchitis virus in embryonated chicken eggs has been used to determine endpoints in virus titration and neutralization assays. The eggs and the respective embryos were weighed and embryo:egg weight (EE) ratios were calculated. The EE ratios were compared with the uninoculated control eggs and endpoints could be calculated objectively. EE indices were also calculated by dividing the EE ratios of inoculated embryonated chicken eggs by t… Show more

“…Compared to KM91, K2p170 showed clearer signs of stunting. This demonstration that egg-adapted strains induce clearer embryo dwarfism than wild strains is in agreement with those of Dhinakar Raj et al (2004). However, the recombinant nephrogenic strain K40/09 and its attenuated counterpart K40/09HP40, which was egg-passaged with heat adaptation, showed opposite results.…”

“…The average EE ratio and the standard deviation of the mock control were calculated. The EE index was determined by dividing the EE ratio of inoculated eggs by the mean EE ratio of mock-inoculated eggs (Dhinakar Raj et al, 2004).…”

“…The developing chicken embryo is indeed a valid and sensitive developmental research tool when used in a well-controlled experimental environment (Vorster and Lizamore, 2001). A previous study indicated that the EE ratio is an objective method for the quantification of embryo dwarfism in IBV-inoculated embryonated chicken eggs and can be used to accurately determine the endpoints of virus titration and neutralization assays (Dhinakar Raj, et al, 2004). In the studies of Wideman and Cowen (Wideman and Cowen, 1987), Graystrain IBV decreases the relative kidney weight ratio.…”
