Background Nutrition plays a pivotal role in the prevention and treatment of endocrine disorders. The aim of this study was to provide a window in order to display the 25-year activities of Endocrinology & Metabolism Research Institute (EMRI), and the gaps and future plans in the field of nutrition and endocrine disorders. Methods To collect papers affiliated to the EMRI in field of nutrition from the inception to December 1st 2019, the electronic databases including PubMed/Medline, Web of Science, and Scopus were searched. Publications in English and Persian languages were included. Scientific Landscapes (VOS viewer) software version 1.6.13 was used to provide bibliometric maps. Results Of 4082 studies identified in the initial search, 319 relevant papers were included. They contributed systematic review and meta-analysis/review (n = 76), clinical trials (n = 58), cross-sectional (n = 171), case-control studies (n = 11), and animal studies (n = 3). Accordingly, most nutrition studies were dedicated to the level of evidence III (cross-sectional studies: 53.60%) followed by systematic review studies (23.82%) with the level of evidence I. There was also an increasing trend in the nutrition studies through years, with a peak in 2019. Conclusion An increasing trend in the publications related to nutrition science is observed at EMRI. However, nutrition research and publications can grow further through expanding collaborations with other fields related to endocrine. Given nutritional assessments in national projects and focusing on the identification of preventive nutritional strategies, considering the situations of our society can be helpful to make nutritional findings more practical.

Background: Several systematic reviews and meta-analyses have assessed the association between egg consumption and human health, but the evidence is often conflicting. Methods:We conducted a systematic literature search to find all systematic reviews and meta-analyses that assess the association between egg consumption and any type of health outcome. We used AMSTAR to evaluate the methodological quality of the reviews, and GRADE to determine the quality of evidence. We visualized the results using a human anatomy diagram and evidence mapping.Results: Our search revealed 29 systematic reviews and meta-analyses. Eight studies were of high methodological quality, 16 studies of medium quality, and five studies of low quality. We identified 34 primary outcomes from the included 29 reviews, which were combined into a total of 22 different health outcomes. Two of the primary outcomes were based on high-quality evidence, 18 on moderate-quality evidence, and 14 on low-quality evidence. Egg consumption was associated with an increased risk of two diseases and decreased risk of six outcomes. For ten outcomes, no significant association was found, and for four outcomes, different reviews came to conflicting conclusions. Conclusions:The association between egg consumption and the risk of cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases and other related diseases has been studied in several meta-analyses. The evidence from different studies on the same topic was often conflicting, which can complicate the making of dietary recommendations.

Dietary acid load and risk of head and neck and oral cavity cancers: An epidemiologic study

Aim Metabolic acidosis subsequent to a high dietary acid load (DAL) leads to inflammation and cell transformation, which are common features of cancer development. Because the epidemiologic evidence associating DAL and cancer risk is still limited, we sought to explore the potential role of DAL as a risk factor for head and neck and oral cavity tumors. Methods A case–control study was performed on 1126 men (563 cases and 563 age frequency and residence matched controls), drawn from the major public hospitals in Montevideo, Uruguay. Participants were interviewed through a multi‐topic questionnaire, including a food frequency questionnaire. Food‐derived nutrients were calculated from available databases. DAL was calculated based on validated measures including potential renal acid load (PRAL) and net endogenous acid production (NEAP) scores. Odds ratios (OR) were estimated by logistic regression, adjusting for potential confounders. Results We found significant and direct associations between dietary acid load and risk of head and neck and oral cavity cancers (OR = 2.10 and OR = 1.95 for highest PRAL and NEAP, respectively). In addition, stratified analyses by subsites displayed the highest estimates for pharyngeal cancer (OR = 2.40 and OR = 2.28 for highest PRAL and NEAP, respectively). No association was found for oral cavity cancers. Conclusions An acidogenic diet may increase the risk of head and neck cancers. Our findings align well with our previous studies focused on other anatomic sites. Studies conducted on food groups and nutritional patterns align with our results. Further studies are needed to confirm these findings.
