Efforts to establish the reliability of the Resident Assessment Instrument

Abstract: a large proportion (from 70 to 96%) of the items in the RAI achieved an adequate to excellent level of reliability, with no substantial differences across countries. The RAI met the standard for good reliability (i.e. a kappa value of 0.6 or higher) in crucial areas of functional status, such as memory, activities of daily living self-performance and support, and bowel and bladder continence in most of the countries. Indicators of mood and behavioural problems achieved adequate reliability levels of 0.4 or hig… Show more

“…The single items related to vision and hearing were comparable with, or at times higher, than data collected in home care and nursing homes in the United States [19] and in a seven-country study of long-term-care residents [18]. The reliability for items related to pain and IADLs was also similar to that reported for inpatient psychiatry [20].…”

“…The current kappa values met or exceeded the scores for most countries, in another multicountry study among long-term-care residents, for items related to ADLs and were at least as high as the lowest kappa value reported for both communication and behavior symptoms [18]. Although higher than in the current study, the kappa values reported by Sgadari et al for mood and behavior symptoms also tended to be much lower than for other domain areas, which is consistent with our findings.…”

“…This information is collected by observations of care-givers and interviews with residents and family members (Morris et al, 1990). MDS items have shown good reliability in several studies and countries , Sgadari et al, 1997. Mood/depressive symptoms…”

“…Any mandated assessment tool is bound to create a certain sense of oppression among its users, which will detract from its acceptability. In contrast, professionals in other countries using the RAI under voluntary auspices are enthusiastic about it (8,34,38). Of course, these are self-selected adopters, who have chosen to use ?…”
