3D visualization is essential for many industrial applications. For instance, in the oil and gas industry, the visualization of reservoirs and their associated wells helps petroleum engineers to develop exploration and production strategies. For that purpose, there are integrated domain- oriented commercial software solutions. However, their 3D visualization part has significant limitations due to their closed source nature and dedicated domain. An alternative is to use general purpose open-source visualization platform such as ParaView. The challenge is to be used seamlessly in combination with in-house data management system which needs an integration effort. Embedding one application into another requires significant effort of programing, especially, when the technology stack of the data management application is different from the one ParaView is built on. In this study we present the solution of using ParaView along with a hypothetical corporate data-management application without embedding one into another. The inter-process communication protocol is based on ParaView Python API. The proposed approach allows using the full power of ParaView and data management application with minimal integration efforts.

Interactive visualization of subterranean formations models is essential for reservoir engineering. ParaView is a good option - it is feature rich, performance oriented, cross-platform, free and open-source. It can run in client-server mode, where heavy processing and rendering is executed on powerful servers in parallel with multiple processors. Custom format support can be implemented in ParaView as an extension in the form of a plug-in of a script for embedded Python-shell. Parallelization of the grid is defined explicitly in the logic of custom readers created as extensions for ParaView. It was identified that the way of splitting the grid between processes can significantly impact the efficiency of resources utilization. The main object of current study was a class of reservoir models that have resolution in vertical direction much smaller than that in horizontal direction. For such grids splitting by vertical blocks proved to be much more efficient than splitting by horizontal layers. In this case not only less memory is required - rendering is also faster. These important findings can help to get visualizations faster for more efficient design processes or even enable visualization of near-the-limits scales.
