Efficient Visual Mixture Design of Experiments using Property Clustering Techniques

Abstract: Mixture design is a design of experiments (DOE) tool used to determine the optimum combination of chemical constituents that deliver a desired response (or property) using a minimum number of experimental runs. While the approach is sufficient for most experimental designs, it suffers from combinatorial explosion and visualization difficulties when dealing with multicomponent mixtures. To circumvent these problems, a recently developed design technique called property clustering is applied. In this type of des… Show more

“…It is known that mixture design-of-experiments method suffers from combinatorial explosion when dealing with multi-component mixtures. 28,29 Combinatorial explosion describes the inability to compute the outcome due to the intractability of the number of inputs; in other words, too many inputs (components) gives far too many outcomes (possible behaviors) to compute. Solvason et al 29 further…”

“…29,36,37 Mixture designs can efficiently evaluate the impact of component fractions in a mixture. 38 In this work, the impact of TiO 2 and ZnO fractions used for the formulation of a mixed metal oxide (MO) photocatalyst mixture on a SBA-15 support, was evaluated for CO 2 photoreduction using a novel combination of a systematic mixture design and photocatalysis theory.…”

“…Mixtures play an important role in the process industries and blends of refrigerants, [1][2][3] polymers, 4,5 and solvents 6 are used in a wide range of applications. Solvent mixtures, for example, are used in separation processes, such as extraction, 7,8 absorption, 9 and crystallisation, 10,11 and in chemical reactions.…”
