Efficient TEM_00-mode operation of a laser-diode side-pumped Nd:YAG laser

Abstract: We report operation of a laser-diode side-pumped Nd: YAG laser with a novel pumping geometry that ensures efficient conversion of pump energy into the TEM(00) mode. Of the 1064-nm output, 11.8 mJ of energy was obtained in a 200-micros pulse with 64 mJ of pump energy at 808 nm. The overall conversion and slope efficiencies were 18% and 23%, respectively.

“…When a laser-atom system is modelled in LASED the default setting is that the spatial intensity profile of the laser beam is uniform. The user can however also specify a two-dimensional (2D) Gaussian laser beam profile, so as to emulate a TEM 00 mode [25]. For a Gaussian beam the intensity as a function of the radial distance from its beam axis r is given by…”

“…[1][2][3][4][5] One of the best types of such sources is the Nd:YAG laser pumped by quasicontinuous wave diode laser bars. [6][7][8] During the past years, much research has been carried out on the generation of Qswitched Nd:YAG lasers with side-pumped structure. Sun et al characterized a side-pumped 0.5 J pulse Nd:YAG laser at 100 Hz with 80 ns pulse width.…”

“…Diode-side pumping for the laser medium is an outstanding method to obtain high output power. It is used in the fields of single-mode laser [29,30], second harmonic generation [31,32], and stimulated Raman scattering [33,34]. Because the diode laser is uniformly incident into the laser rod, the thermal effect is relatively light in the diode-side pumped configuration.…”
