Efficient Procedures for the Optimization of Frequency Selective Surfaces

Abstract: Eight different optimization algorithms are applied to determine the best configuration of a patch unit cell of a frequency selective surface used as a radar absorbing material. The algorithms include seven stochastic binary optimizers, which are based on the concept of genetic algorithms and evolutionary strategies as well as one quasi-deterministic optimizer based on an algorithm inspired by hill-climbing strategies. The comparison of results obtained from each algorithm shows the very high probability of fi… Show more

“…20 log 10 R TMi + 15 + 20 log 10 R TMi + 15 /2 (8) where N is the number of incidence angles and R TEi and R TMi are the magnitude of the reflection coefficient for the i-th incidence angle and TE and TM polarizations, respectively. For the optimization of angular stability the fitness function is defined as the average of the above values.…”

“…In addition, since wave propagation analysis is required for the structural optimization of MMI couplers, large population sizes increase the computational time. To overcome such drawbacks of the SGA, a real-coded GA [18], in which the chromosome is represented by a vector of floating point numbers, and a micro-GA (µGA) [19][20][21][22][23], in which the population size is typically five, have been proposed.…”
