Efficient Multiple Concatenated Codes With Turbo-Like Decoding for UEP Wireless Transmission of Scalable JPEG 2000 Images

Abstract: Most multimedia source encoders produce scalable bit streams that are vulnerable to noisy channel effects. Unequal error protection (UEP) designs are attractive solutions for such scalable bit streams. In the other hand, the structure of multiple concatenated codes, which consist of the combination of two or more elementary encoders and interleavers, offers a flexible implementation of unequal data protection. To provide an efficient protection for embedded source bit streams, an adaptive concatenated coding/d… Show more

“…The proposed scheme was simulated in MATLAB8.3 (R2014a). Systematic Rate Compatible Puncture Turbo (S-RCPT) Codes (no systematic/information bits are punctured) with parent code rate of 1/3, generator (13,15) [28]. An iterative MAP decoding with five decoding iterations is used.…”

“…In [12], UEP for progressive image transmission using heuristically optimized rate compatible punctured turbo (RCPT) codes is considered. In [13], an adaptive concatenated coding scheme is proposed with turbo-like iterative decoding for scalable transmission of JPEG 2000 images. In [14], LDPC codes that are suitable for UEP are constructed.…”

“…There are various approaches where different variants of encoding systems have been introduced in past [10]. Most recently, the work carried out by Mhamdi et al [11] have used turbo coding system for enhancing the wireless transmission of image encoded by JPEG2000 standard. Low-Density Parity Check (LDPC) is another frequently used approach for encoding image and claimed to offer better optimized performance as seen in the work of Deng et al [12] and Bocharova et al [13].…”

“…Further, in 2006, Microsoft proposed it as a compression method and file format for images. After that, in 2009, it was announced as the International Organization for Standardization (ISO)/International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) and International Telecommunication Union (ITU) worldwide standard by the Joint Photographic Experts Group (JPEG) [ 4 , 5 , 6 ]. JPEG-XR has better compression efficiency than JPEG [ 7 , 8 ].…”
