“…INTRODUCTION T HE SOLID-STATE lasers emission at 2 µm eye-safe regions have attracted much interest for their various applications in LIDAR, laser ranging, materials processing and microsurgery. Additionally, the pulsed 2 µm lasers with high peak powers are also favorable for pumping of solid-state Cr 2+ :ZnSe/ZnS lasers [1] and optical parametric oscillators (OPOs) based on ZGP [2] or GaAs [3]. The Tm 3+ -doped crystals offer an attractive alternative to develop high efficiency and broad tunable lasers in 2 µm spectral region [4].…”

“…The solid-state laser emission at 2 μm eye-safe region relying on trivalent lanthanide ions Tm 3+ have attracted much interest for their significant applications in civil, military and scientific research fields [13,14]. A long-term and on-going effort has been paid in this wavelength region is to explore novel host crystals for doping Tm 3+ ions.…”

“…This provides Cr:ZnSe with the highest gain among vibronic lasers and enables efficient room-temperature operation. The remarkable characteristics of the ultrabroadband (~1000 nm) Cr 2+ :ZnSe crystal, such as the high emission cross section of the order of 10 -18 cm 2 [96], the negligibly low excited state absorption (ESA) [97], the fairly good chemical and mechanical stability and the thermal conductivity nearly as high as in sapphire, gives this material enormous potential as a laser medium for diode-pumped tunable MIR lasers. ZnSe laser make it possible to produce 1~2 optical-cycle ultra-short laser pulses, which will find great potential applications in the femtosecond laser regime.…”
