Efficient Isolation and Solubilization of Pristine Single‐Walled Nanotubes in Bile Salt Micelles

Abstract: We have investigated a wide variety of surfactants for their efficiency in dissolving isolated single‐walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) in water. In doing so, we have completely avoided the harsh chemical or mechanical conditions, such as acid or ultrasonic treatments, that are known to damage SWNTs. Bile salts in particular are found to be exceptionally effective in dissolving individual tubes, as evidenced by highly resolved optical absorption spectra, bright bandgap fluorescence, and the unprecedented resolut… Show more

“…in 2002, 71 ultrasonic processing has been used to isolate SWNTs in an extensive library of dispersing agents including surfactants, 119,130 polymers, 120 single-stranded DNA, 19,132,133 peptides, 134 and cagelike molecules such as Sarkosyl. 135 Figure 3-1 contrasts the appearance of an aqueous suspension containing mostly bundles and an aqueous sample enriched in isolated SWNTs.…”

“…Practically, the non-covalent functionalisation in aqua media was efficiently achieved via surfactant [164,167] or polymer [166] assisted ultra-sonication. Initially, the sonication breaks/collapses nanotube bundles with the following wrapping of the CNT by surfactants/ polymers.…”
