Efficient In Situ Utilization of Caustic for Sequential Recovery and Separation of Sn, Fe, and Cu in Microbial Fuel Cells

Abstract: A novel strategy to sequentially recover and separate Sn(II), Fe(II) and Cu(II) from a synthetic wastewater from printed circuit board (PrCB) manufacturing in a single microbial fuel cell (MFCSn)‐MFCFe‐MFCCu process was achieved, where in‐situ produced caustic was primarily utilized for Sn precipitation (MFCSn) and then secondly used for Fe deposition (MFCFe) and anaerobic Cu(II) reduction in the final MFCCu. An external resistance of 1000 Ω in the MFCSn and MFCFe, and a 10 Ω resistor in the MFCCu achieved pre… Show more

“…X-ray diffraction (XRD) characterizations were performed on a powder X-ray diffractometer (XRD-6000, Shimadzu, Japan) with CuKα radiation under the operation conditions of 40 kV and 50 mA. The chemical components of the synthesized W/Mo oxides, g-C3N4 and WO3/MoO3/g-C3N4 were analyzed using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS, Kratos AXIS Ultra DLD) [33]. The UVvis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS) were measured by an Agilent HP 8453 UV -vis spectrophotometer.…”

“…Ineffective extracellular electron transport will negatively impact intracellular electron transport, thus preventing the bacterium from synthesizing adenosine triphosphate (ATP), which is the energy source of activities for metabolism and growth 24 . The low electron acceptors for the bioavailability lead to inefficient extracellular electron transport and inactive vital movement of bacteria, along with reducing the efficiency of bio‐leaching and environmental remediation 25 …”

“…10 In summary, the comprehensive results presented in this study through multiple Here Fig. 11 The practical application of the combined photo-assisted MFCs and Fenton-MFCs process for degradation and mineralization of contaminants of emerging concern is favored by the use of the two-chamber MFC system, which in contrast to the one-chamber system allow the simultaneous treatment of two different wastewaters and the control over the toxicity of the water contaminants to the anodic exoelectrogens species [38][39][40][41][56][57][58]60]. However, the practical implementation of this technology for industrial wastewater treatment requires further pilot and full-scale investigations, to evaluate the long-term operation and stability of the system over a feed with fluctuating characteristics and the process economics [54,58,[61][62][63].…”

“…The graphite felts at the anode were connected with a carbon rod and at the cathode with a titanium wire, and the external circuit was closed through a 200 Ω resistor. The use of the 200 Ω resistor resulted in optimal operation, in comparison to lower (10 Ω) or higher (500 Ω) resistors [41][42]. With such resistor consistently higher rates of MNZ degradation and CE an were achieved [ Fig.…”
