Efficient Direct Water‐Solubilisation of Single‐Walled Carbon Nanotube Derivatives

Abstract: Application under mild conditions of a one-pot reductive -oxidative synthetic protocol to single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNT) affords water-soluble oxygenated products that have been characterised by mean of XPS, solution 1 H-NMR, UV-VIS-NIR, vibrational FTIR and Raman, SEM-energy dispersive x-ray (EDX), XRD, and ESI-MS techniques. Different oxygenated functionalities are evicted to be covalently 789

“…36 Typically, the peak at 1630 cm −1 is detected as a very weak signal in perfect SWCNTs because of the symmetry of the dipole moment. [37][38][39] Furthermore, this peak corresponded to the CvC stretching mode of SWCNT graphitic layers near the modified sites, which is IR-activated by extensive sidewall functionalization. 38,40,41 From these facts, it is evident that the peak at 1630 cm −1 existed by the functionalization of SWCNTs.…”

“…3c and d, respectively. 2,39,[50][51][52][53][54] Generally, the UV-VIS-NIR absorption spectrum of the arcdischarge SWCNTs consists of four bands. These four absorption bands are divided into a -plasmon ͑200-300 nm͒, the first metallic interband transition ͑M 11 Ϸ 590-765 nm͒, and the first ͑S 11 Ϸ 1240-2100 nm͒ and the second ͑S 22 Ϸ 760-1250 nm͒ semiconducting interband transitions.…”

“…Furthermore, in FT-IR spectrum of Sample No. 2, two other peaks are observed at 1250 cm −1 and 1160 cm −1 , which are assigned to stretching vibration of epoxy C-O-C [52,54] and different alcoholic C-OH [50], respectively. As for Sample No.…”

“…1 and 2 presents multiple absorption peaks of various chemical bonds. The strongest peak in both spectra, set at approximately 3445 cm −1 , is indicative of ubiquitous O-H stretches [50][51][52]. Besides, both spectra present several peculiar absorption peaks at 2875-2957 cm −1 (symmetric and anti-symmetric stretching vibrations of CH 2 ) [51,52], at approximately 1629 and 1440 cm −1 (C=C, skeletal vibrations of unoxidized graphitic domains) [51,53], at approximately 1387 cm −1 (the stretching vibration of C-O of carboxylic acid) [52] and at 1053 cm −1 (alkoxy C-O stretching vibration) [52][53][54].…”

“…In order to deal with these problems, various physical and chemical modifications [ 13 ] on CNTs have been carried out for the purpose of improving their solubility in water, which will in turn partially resolve toxicity issue. For example, hydroxyl group [ 14 ], carboxyl group [ 15 ], polyethylene glycol [ 16 22 ], amino group [ 23 ], poly(allylamine) [ 24 ], DNA or RNA [ 25 , 26 ], and many others [ 13 , 27 ] have been used to functionalize CNTs. Meanwhile, the studies on the toxicities, bioeffects, and environment health risks about CNTs have also made great progresses in the past few years; the studies themselves have moved from in vitro model and statistical assay to in vivo animal studies and mechanisms investigations [ 11 , 28 31 ].…”
