Nowadays there is a serious trend to design electrical machines for propulsion units as cheep as possible. Machines that lack the permanent magnets having performances close to those that embed permanents magnets represent now the main interest in this field. Such a machine is the variable reluctance synchronous machine. Being derived from the family of synchronous machines is field oriented controlled. In the present paper one particular such machine is presented in detail designed for automotive applications. An analytical model is also presented used later to implement the maximum torque per ampere control, considering this strategy as being the one suitable for such applications. The simulation program is built in Matlab Simulink presented together with the control strategy and the results. The model of the machine takes into account both saturation and iron losses.

This paper discusses the Maximum Torque Per Ampere (MTPA) control of synchronous motors, which have become an indispensable part of highly-efficient motor drives. It explains the nature of torque produced by synchronous motors, ways to find its maximum and algorithms to operate at this point, despite changes of loads and motor parameter variations. The authors propose a classification of the MTPA methods, based on the features of each algorithm or group of similar methods. They demonstrate the conventional control scheme and discuss the modifications necessary for the implementation of each method. This paper reviews existing maximum torque per ampere control algorithms, discusses their pros and cons and suggests possible areas of usage for each group of methods. The authors of the paper share their vast experience in the industry and research aspects, which were obtained by developing industrial, commercial, traction and military drives, and report on their views on the perspective of each method taken into consideration.

Öz: Senkron Relüktans Motor (SynRM) sağlam ve basit yapı, düşük maliyetli üretim, birim hacim başına yüksek moment imkânı, kontrol basitliği, alan zayıflatma kabiliyeti ve rotor sargılarının bulunmaması nedeniyle azalan kayıplar gibi birçok avantaja sahiptir. Bu yüzden, bu motorlar çok sayıda endüstriyel ve otomotiv uygulamalar için ilgi çekici hale gelmeye başlamıştır. Düşük çap ve düşük gerilime sahip bir motor ile yüksek moment üretilmesi oldukça zordur. Bu makalede; fotovoltaik (PV) panellerin ürettiği düşük gerilim seviyesiyle çalışabilen bir SynRM tasarımı amaçlanmıştır. Bu motor iyi bir dinamiğe sahip, yüksek kalkış momentli ve yüksek verimli bir motor olarak tasarlanmıştır. Motor, akım başına düşen maksimum moment (MTPA) kontrol algoritması ile kontrol edilmiştir. Ayrıca panellerden maksimum güç elde edilebilmesi için Maksimum Güç Noktası İzleme (MPPT) algoritması kullanılmıştır. Bu algoritma motorun hız-referans bilgisini otomatik olarak değiştirerek sistemin maksimum verimde çalışmasını sağlamıştır. Bu çalışmada, geleneksek sistemlere göre daha verimli, daha kompakt ve kullanım kolaylığı sağlayan bir sistem elde edilmiştir.
