Efficient Charge Carrier Separation in l-Alanine Acids Derived N-TiO2 Nanospheres: The Role of Oxygen Vacancies in Tetrahedral Ti4+ Sites

Abstract: N-doped TiO2 with oxygen vacancies exhibits many advantages for photocatalysis, such as enhanced visible light absorbency, inhibition of the photogenerated charge carrier recombination, etc. However, preparation of N-doped TiO2 with oxygen vacancies under mild conditions is still a challenge. Herein, N-doped TiO2 nanospheres with tetrahedral Ti4+ sites were synthesized by using dodecylamine as template and assisted by l-alanine acids. The obtained samples were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), s… Show more

“…The oxygen vacancies located at 0.75-1.18 eV below the conduction band edge are responsible for the long lifetime of the photoexcited carriers. [43][44][45]50] The introduction of more oxygen vacancies is also confirmed by comparing the temperature dependences of photoluminescence (PL) spectra from the samples, as shown in Figure 16. The PL spectra were measured at various sample temperatures with an excitation light of 313 nm in wavelength (4 eV in photon energy).…”

“…This suggests that the PAA contributes to reducing the concentration of residual charged carriers attributed to oxygen vacancies unintentionally present in TiO 2 . [43,44] The oxygen vacancies are known to act as shallow donors. [43][44][45] In the presence of UV irradiation, the conductivities of samples become larger because of UV-photoexcited carriers generated in the samples.…”

“…In another study, Chen et al [110] investigated the decay kinetics of photogenerated electrons that result in recombination or carrier reactions in the synthesized N-doped TiO 2 samples using time-resolved infrared (IR) spectroscopy. The observed transient absorbance spectrum at 1910 cm −1 shown in Fig.…”

“…Photocatalysis, as a potential route to relieving environmental and energy issues, has been intensively applied for pollutant degradation [1][2][3][4], water splitting [5][6][7], and solar energy conversion [8][9][10][11]. As a typical metal sulfide, ZnS, which has a large band gap (3.6~3.8 eV), exhibits excellent photocatalytic capacity, owing to its strong oxidation and high negative potentials of excited electrons [12,13].…”
