Batteries are a complex electrochemical device that exhibit non-linearity and stochastic behavior which rely upon the operational conditions and environmental factors, making battery monitoring a vital feature throughout its application. This paper introduces a novel web-based battery monitoring and control system that utilizes Long Range (LoRa) communication technology, an integral part of the Internet of Things (IoT). The system is implemented with the ESP32 microcontroller, with an emphasis on affordability in broader applications. The system provides comprehensive real-time online data by integrating a combination of multiple sensors. The proposed system seeks to address the limitations of existing communication technology by utilizing the benefits of LoRa, a technology that facilitates effective long-range, low-energy communication which makes it particularly well-suited for real-time monitoring applications. In addition, a control operation enables users to regulate crucial aspects of batteries, such as their charging and discharging. The research conducted a meticulous experimental evaluation of the proposed system at different operations, and the results successfully aligned with the main objective and aims of the research. The proposed system successfully enables real-time remote monitoring and user control, long-term data visualization through data logging, and assessment of battery conditions. Data logging was introduced to enhance the utilization of future battery evaluation, such as State-of-Charge (SOC), State-of-Health (SOH) and Remaining Useful Life (RUL). As a result, the developed system makes it suitable for many applications requiring effective energy storage solutions, such as renewable energy and Electric Vehicle (EV) applications.

The dwindling supply of fossil fuels has created a shortage, while the discharge of CO2 emissions from internal combustion engines poses a serious threat to the environment through air pollution. Hence, electric vehicles (EVs) play a vital role in the automotive sector by decreasing CO2 emissions and reducing the usage of fossil fuels. The performance of EVs is also comparable to that of internal combustion engines used in automobiles. The faithful operation of an EV relies on three main parts: the battery, controller, and motor. This proposed research article emphasizes the design, implementation, and testing of a low-cost EV controller that operates at a lower frequency than other conventional high-frequency controllers. A PMDC motor is used as a load to rotate the wheels, and a Lithium-Ion battery powers the electric vehicle. The controller, which is the major part of the vehicle, is used to control the PMDC motor. The controller controls the output voltage, and the converter is controlled by the controller. Compared to conventional vehicles or transport, electric vehicles are more efficient, and this E-vehicle's load capability will be increased. The ripple of the output voltage from the converter will be reduced by adding capacitors.

Design, Implementation, and Deployment of Modular Battery Management System for IIoT-Based Applications

This paper proposes design and implementation of a battery management system (BMS) for the industrial internet of things (IIoT) enabled applications. The hardware and software development of this BMS is briefly presented in this paper. In terms of hardware development, the presented BMS have modular topology and has 1) high fault tolerance and 2) has exceptionally flexible deployment owing to its topology having multiple local management units (LMUs) connected to a central management unit (CMU). This hardware design approach aims to address the overall design efficiency and cost trade-off of BMS deployment. The hardware design efficiency is tested using actual deployment. In terms of fault tolerance using 1 -3 LMUs at fault, the voltage monitoring accuracy is maintained for each LMUs. An average of 0.00017 V, 0.0008 V and 0.001 V voltage difference is yielded for 1, 2, and 3 modules at fault respectively. Additionally, core BMS sub-circuit is tested to verify hardware design efficiency such as the DC-to-DC converter which yielded 92.74%. Furthermore, the CMU is integrated with a wireless communication circuit that enables IIoTbased applications such as the emerging edge-based, and a plethora of intelligent deployment. In terms of software, the presented BMS aims to realize state-of-the-art processing through IIoT based approach. For software testing and verification, the BMS is deployed to an unmanned ground vehicle (UGV). The signal stability is tested for UGV based application at a 3500s deployment time whereas an average of 0.0010V voltage difference is yielded. This is verified using time markers which is further analyzed using softwarebased signal processing and acquisition simulation. Concisely, the proposed BMS aims to converge IIoT applications to its actual deployment. The proposed BMS is designed, implemented, and successfully deployed to test its viability both in the simulation platform and actual deployment.INDEX TERMS Battery management system, edge processing, industrial IoT, lithium-ion, modular architecture.
