Efficient and Sustainable Regeneration of Bifunctional Ionic Liquid for Rare Earth Separation

Abstract: An effective and sustainable strategy of regeneration is important for the industrial application of functionalized ionic liquid in hydrometallurgy. The transformations of [tri-n-octylmethylammonium][bis-sec-octylphenoxyl acetate] ([N1888][SOPAA]) and [trihexyl (tetradecyl) phosphonium][sec-octylphenoxy acetate] ([P6,6,6,14][SOPAA]) under acidic and alkaline conditions were investigated. This paper developed a novel approach for sustainable stripping and efficient regeneration of acid–base coupling bifunc… Show more

“…[ 24 ] first demonstrated RTIL as media for clean liquid–liquid extraction was feasible, which avoided the use of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Followed by Rogers's work, ILs were widely used in metal ions separation, such as rare earth elements, [ 25‐27 ] Sr 2+ , [ 28‐30 ] UO 2+ . [ 31 ] Shi et al .…”

“…Ionic liquids (ILs) have gained considerable attention for metal ions separation in solvent extraction system owning to their superior characteristics such as low vapor pressure, nonflammable properties, and tunable structures . As an extracting agent, ILs can be manipulated through design of the cation and anions to improve the extraction efficiency and the selectivity of metal ions of interest . The hydrophobic character and negligible vapor pressure of certain ILs allow their use as solvents to replace traditional volatile molecular solvents .…”

“…ILs also act as either an inner diluent or an active extractant in the extraction systems, because their unique ion-exchange capability can offer an ideal solvation environment for extraction/separation of ionic metal species [23]. However, it should be stressed that ILbased extraction systems do not only have advantages, they also have some limitations [24]. The cations or anions of ILs can be transferred into the aqueous phase during the extraction operation when an extraction reaction occurs through the ion-exchange mechanism [25].…”
