Efficient Aggressive Behavior Recognition of Pigs Based on Temporal Shift Module

Abstract: Aggressive behavior among pigs is a significant social issue that has severe repercussions on both the profitability and welfare of pig farms. Due to the complexity of aggression, recognizing it requires the consideration of both spatial and temporal features. To address this problem, we proposed an efficient method that utilizes the temporal shift module (TSM) for automatic recognition of pig aggression. In general, TSM is inserted into four 2D convolutional neural network models, including ResNet50, ResNeXt5… Show more

“…It is evident from the charts that our statistical results differ very little from the manually observed results. The data were preprocessed according to the following procedure: (a) Grouping the tracking results by pig ID (1,2,3,4). (b) Calculating the center-point positions of the bounding boxes for each pig.…”

“…Pig tracking is of significant importance in pig farm management. Through the individual localization and tracking of pigs, it is possible to collect data on pig movements, analyze pig behavior, and monitor various pig-related information, to find the abnormal pigs in a timely manner [1,2]. At the same time, the automatic tracking and monitoring of pigs can avoid labor-intensive and error-prone manual management, thereby improving management efficiency [3][4][5].…”

“…To recognize the aggressive behavior of group-housed pigs, Gao et al [12] presented a hybrid model combining CNN and Gated Recurrent Unit (GRU) to extract behavior features, and a specific spatiotemporal attention mechanism was added into the model to better classify the behaviors. Ji et al [28] utilized a temporal shift module inserted into four different CNN networks to automatically recognize pig behaviors. The whole model was efficient, without extra parameters and complexity.…”

“…Such behavior typically occurs after mixing, with the most frequent instances of aggression occurring during the first few hours after mixing [ 1 ]. Aggressive behavior in pigs commonly results in physical injuries and skin lesions, and in extreme cases, a bacterial infection of the wound could cause the death of the pigs and increase treatment costs [ 2 , 3 ]. Studies on pig aggressive behavior indicate that such behavior has a heritability of 0.3 to 0.4 [ 4 , 5 ].…”
