Efficiency of traps for Stomoxys calcitrans and Stomoxys niger niger on Reunion Island

Abstract: The main objective of this study was to compare the trapping efficiency of two Alsynite sticky traps (modified Williams and modified Broce) and two phtalogen blue cloth traps (Vavoua and Nzi) to be used in an integrated control programme of Stomoxys spp. (Diptera: Muscidae) on Reunion Island. Mean daily catches of these flies on two dairy farms differed significantly between the four types of trap. The Broce trap was the least efficient and had the lowest specificity for Stomoxys spp. The Vavoua, Nzi and Willi… Show more

“…The six locations of Vavoua traps were chosen to cover all grazing pastures around the cowshed and to be as close as possible to the dairy herd. The distances between different traps were at least 50 m to avoid competition between traps (Gilles et al, 2007). Captured insects were killed by freezing at −70 • C, identified and counted trap by trap.…”

“…According to Gilles et al (2007), the Vavoua trap was used to monitor the dynamics of blood feeding insects including stable flies and Tabanids. Six Vavoua traps were installed at 8:30 a.m. and were removed at 6:00 p.m. once a month, between May 2008 and May 2009.…”
