Efficiency of The Spaw Model in Estimation of Saturated Hydraulic Conductivity in Calcareous Soils

Abstract: The measurement of soil hydraulic properties is tedious, time-consuming, and costly. An alternative approach is to formulate models that utilize the physical and chemical properties of the soil as input variables to predict soil saturated hydraulic conductivity (Ks). However, the previous studies have not paid attention to the calcium carbonate content in their models; it can lead to reducing the size and number of the pores in the soil which, in turn, can lead to reduction Ks . Here we evaluated the ability o… Show more

“…Due to time and money constraints, we did not have information regarding some soil characteristics like bulk density (SOL_BD), hydraulic conductivity (SOL_K) and water content (SOL_AWC) required when building the SWAT model. Instead, we used the soil-plant-atmosphere-water model (SPAW), an open-source software [55]. The SPAW program automatically determines those parameters according to certain soil properties like organic matter, sand and clay percentage.…”

“…These crystals can develop within soils and precipitate gradually in clayey or silt micromasses, thereby filling the pores between soil particles and aggregates over time (Durand et al, 2010). Consequently, the soil's hydraulic conductivity can be severely reduced due to the reduction in the size and number of pores (Karim & Fattah, 2020).…”
