Abstract: These findings indicated that removing the dental plaque biofilm with a toothbrush and dental floss by a hygienist before scaling with an ultrasonic device was more effective in reducing the working time of the dental hygienist.

“…It can also reduce the fear of individuals with disabilities about accessing oral health services and even shorten the scaling time required. 38 Unfortunately, previous studies have demonstrated that community-dwelling individuals with disabilities have worse oral health than those living in institutions. 22 39 Since these participants were living at home with relatives, their families were generally more concerned with physiological diseases than with oral conditions and were not aware of the importance of oral hygiene.…”

“…In addition, the device can easily access subgingival areas and furcations. Ultrasonic scaler is a safe and comfortable device, if it is correctly used on a healthy tooth surface, with correct tip position, lateral pressure and power level [2]. Knowledge about the essence of oral hygiene should be instilled in the first years of life, through school education and adaptation visits in the dental office.…”

“…This is a consequence of fear, lack of knowledge and motivation, as well as neglecting regular dental check-ups and hygienization procedures. Therefore, we should strive to develop the habit of regularly applying for dental check-ups and performing professional hygienization to prevent periodontal tissue diseases and maintain oral health [2]. Dentists should put emphasis on educating and motivating a patient with the technique of proper brushing, including the appropriate frequency of brushes, the type of brush and the use of additional instruments such as dental floss, toothpicks, irrigators or interdental brushes.…”

“…These findings contradict those of a previous study by Kim et al, which showed that dental plaque removal with a self-care device before the scaling procedure reduced the time required for ultrasonic scaling. 7 Lastly, total scaling time was significantly shorter in the AS group, whose subjects underwent dental plaque removal prior to scaling, when compared to the SA and SR groups, whose subjects underwent scaling prior to polishing (p < 0.05). Minimizing the time of dental procedures not only alleviates the patients' burden but also reduces the economic burden of dental clinics and social expenses.…”

“…Evaluation categories included the following: the number of natural teeth, the number of artificial teeth, the number of missing or non-erupted teeth, the number of filled teeth, clinical attachment level and Periodontal Index. 7,14,15 Two dental hygienists determined the subjects' oral hygiene statuses after staining the intraoral dental plaque biofilm and calculus with a disclosing solution (GC Tri Plaque). Evaluation categories included the Simplified Debris Index (S-DI), Simplified Calculus Index (S-CI) and residual deposits.…”
