Efficiency of pheromone traps for monitoring Diabrotica virgifera virgifera LeConte

Abstract: Mark–release–recapture trials with male western corn rootworm Diabrotica virgifera virgifera LeConte (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) beetles were conducted to better understand capture data of pheromone traps produced in Europe during monitoring programmes. Median recapture rate in maize fields in Hungary, Italy and Switzerland was 10%. Two types of sex pheromone trap (sticky sheet and non‐sticky container traps), placed inside or outside maize fields, showed no differences in efficiency. Logit analyses of recaptu… Show more

“…Our study thus shows that soil pest density did not correlate with official (aerial) pest monitoring. The main reason for this lies in the pheromone's pest attraction in the mid to long range [64]. We also assume that a certain proportion of adults could have died on the soil surface and in the maize canopy before they were caught on the unbaited yellow sticky traps in the cages, while some were washed away by the rain, decomposed, or were not stuck to the traps due to dirt accumulating on the traps.…”

“…Baited and non-baited traps are available to monitor WCR population levels (Schaub et al 2011 ). The most widely used non-baited traps include yellow sticky traps, and they are readily available from various manufacturers.…”

“…Diabrotica virgifera virgifera starts to disperse especially for long-distance dispersal if the population abundance exceeds a certain level. Perhaps the reported constraints of the efficiency of pheromone traps by Schaub et al (2011) must be taken into consideration.…”
