Efficiency of Multifunctional Antibacterial Hydrogels for Chronic Wound Healing in Diabetes: A Comprehensive Review

Abstract: Diabetic chronic wounds or amputation, which are complications of diabetes mellitus (DM), are a cause of great suffering for diabetics. In addition to the lack of oxygen, elevated reactive oxygen species (ROS) and reduced vascularization, microbial invasion is also a critical factor that induces non-healing chronic diabetic wounds, ie, wounds still remaining in the stage of inflammation, after which the wound tissue begins to age and becomes necrotic. To clear up the infection, alleviate the inflammation in th… Show more

“…More recently, hydrogels have been deemed a promising strategy since they mimic the extracellular structure and can also be used as a drug delivery system, which are both essential properties to improve wound healing management [ 5 , 6 ]. Furthermore, hydrogels have been shown to preserve the internal moist environment, to improve debridement, and to prevent or impede the spread of infection by delivering local antibacterial treatment [ 7 ].…”

“…Diabetes is not only a huge health burden, but it also causes a considerable cost on society, economies, and health care systems. DM is a chronic, metabolic disease characterized by compromised insulin secretion, resistance to insulin action, or both, leading to hyperglycemia [ 2 , 3 ]. In fact, as a consequence of hyperglycemia, diabetic patients suffer from improper functioning of heart, blood vessels, eyes, kidneys, and nerves.…”
