Flat plate collectors (FPCs) are the leading solar thermal technology for low-medium range temperature applications. However, their expansion in developing countries is still lacking because of their poor thermal performance. Improving the thermal performance of flat plate collectors (FPCs) is a crucial concern addressed in this review This study comprehensively discussed the performance improvement methods of FPCs, such as design modification, reflectors, working fluid, and energy storage materials, by covering current issues and future recommendations. Design factors such as coating and glass cover thickness, thickness of absorber plate and material, air gap between the glass cover and absorber plate, and riser spacing, along with insulation materials, are examined for their impact on FPC performance. Absorber design changes with selective coatings for improving the heat transmission rate between the working fluid and absorber are critical for enhancing collectors’ thermal output. The nanofluids utilization improved FPC’s thermal performance in terms of energetic and exergetic outcomes in the 20–30% range. Moreover, adding a heat storage unit extends the operating hours and thermal output fluctuations of FPCs. Research suggests that employing turbulators and nanofluids as heat transfer fluids are particularly effective for enhancing heat transfer in FPCs. This comprehensive review serves as a critical tool for evaluating and comparing various heat transfer augmentation techniques, aiding in the selection of the most suitable option.

The proposed Trombe wall design is an innovative and effective solution for addressing issues related to building energy efficiency. The Trombe wall can help reduce a building's energy consumption, provide optimal indoor temperature, and minimize the building's environmental impact by utilizing renewable energy sources.The article deals with the study of the heat-air characteristics of the Trombe Wall, which performs the functions of external protection of a modular house, with the aim of further evaluating the possibility of using it as a hybrid protection with additional heating and ventilation functions assigned to it. The results of experimental research conducted on one of the elements of external protection of a modular house in the form of the Trombe Wall are presented. The experimentally obtained graphic dependences were compared with the calculated data and the convergence was evaluated. The proposed design allows you to organize air exchange in the premises with a multiplicity within 1-1.5 h −1 , and also provides an opportunity to provide additional thermal power in the amount of 250 W/m 2 . The article presents the results of experimental studies that allow to evaluate the thermal characteristics of the proposed design of external protection for a modular house. These results indicate that with the given geometric dimensions, in particular with a volume of 14 m 3 , the thermal power utilized by the Trombe wall is within 0.2-0.7 kW.

The main contribution of this study is to present a modified V-corrugated grooved absorber plate in the construction of plane solar air heaters for higher performance. The combined effects of extended heat transfer area due to the V-shaped absorber, the suction process by the grooves that maintains the convective flow closed to the heated absorber and the jet impingement enable high efficiency of the proposed solar collector. For simulation purposes, the conduction equation is employed for temperature computations inside the solid elements, while the turbulent airflow equations are solved based on the CFD method using the ÎºÎµâˆ’ turbulence model. The present finite element-based analysis is performed using the COMSOL Multi-physic software. To demonstrate the rate of irreversibilities in a solar collector, the entropy generation due to heat transfer and viscous friction and, accordingly, the second law efficiency are computed at different steady operating conditions. The numerical procedure is validated by comparing the obtained numerical findings with the experimental results reported in the literature. From the obtained results, it is found that the proposed absorber plate has a triple-edged sword positive effect on the solar air heater performance, such that the thermal efficiencies up to 80% are computed. Moreover, about 10% improvement in the thermal efficiency of the proposed solar collector compared with its competitor (solar air heater with a simple V-corrugated absorber) reveals the positive impact of the designed absorber plate. Also, the increase in the height of V-shaped absorber from ð»ð»0=2 ð‘ð‘ð‘ð‘ ð‘¡ð‘¡ð‘¡ð‘¡ ð»ð»0=4 ð‘ð‘ð‘ð‘ leads to about 11% improvement in the heater thermal efficiency. The numerical findings can be considered as a good reference to find an alternative for efficient solar collectors.
