Efficiency dynamics and sustainability of the Indian IT-ITeS industry: An empirical investigation using DEA

Abstract: Efficiency considerations of the Indian IT-ITeS industry have come to the forefront especially with slowdown in the US and other major industrialised economies. Using the DEA technique, this paper argues that the key to sustainability rests on the operational efficiency of the players. Primary data for this study has been collected from STP Kolkata for a period of 15 years. The results reveal that (technical) efficiency varies across industry segments and increases with greater global orientation of the unit. … Show more

“…While analysing the efficiency and sustainability, software technological park of Kolkata found that the efficiency trend declined during 1997–2007 and information technology-enabled services (ITES) were relatively less efficient. It was found that export-orientation has a positive impact on technical efficiency (Bhattacharjee, 2012). To estimate efficiency and the contribution of the IT industry in economic development, it was found that overall technical efficiency has declined.…”

“…The study suggests that the IT-companies may invest in R&D activities and develop intellectual capital to attain competitive advantages and enhancement in performance. Bhattacharjee (2012) examines the technical efficiency of Kolkata's Software Technology Park (STP)'s IT-ITeS firms using output-oriented DEA model under VRS assumption. For this purpose, data is collected from the STP, Kolkata for the period of 15 years (from 1993-94 to 2007-08).…”
