Efficiency comparison of graphical approaches for designing contaminant detection networks in groundwater

Abstract: [1] Graphical approaches for locating monitoring wells near landfills in aquifers dominated by intergranular porosity were evaluated. Both perpendicular groundwater monitoring networks (wells constrained to a monitoring locus perpendicular to flow) and equidistant networks (wells located the same distance along flow paths) were considered, along with several setbacks between wells and a landfill and different flow fields. For an orthogonal landfill oblique to groundwater flow, equidistant networks generally ou… Show more

“…Hudak (2001) devised a graphical approach to configure detection wells at the downgradient of a landfill. The author evaluated detection capabilities of graphically designed perpendicular and equidistant groundwater monitoring networks in aquifers dominated by intergranular porosity in his later work (Hudak, 2002). However, in both studies he did not consider the uncertainties due to the subsurface heterogeneity and contaminant leak location.…”

“…Additional networks were obtained by compressing (perpendicular to groundwater flow) well locations in equalspaced networks closer to the downgradient corner of the landfill. Previous work (Hudak, 2002) showed that slightly compressed networks were effective for detecting chemical releases from landfills. in the equal-spaced network occupy centrelines of ten equal-width flow tubes.…”

“…Storck et al (1997) extended this model to three dimensions incorporating local dispersion. Hudak (2002) presented a deterministic graphical approach to evaluate detection capabilities of perpendicular and equidistant ground water monitoring networks in aquifers dominated by intergranular porosity. Mahar and Datta (1997) used an optimization approach to design a ground water quality monitoring network and to identify the source of contamination.…”
