Efficiency and Management of Nitrogen Fertilization in Sugar Beet as Spring Crop: A Review

Abstract: Sugar beet fertilization is a very complex agrotechnical measure for farmers. The main reason is that technological quality is equally important as sugar beet yield, but the increment of the root yield does not follow the root quality. Technological quality implies the concentration of sucrose in the root and the possibility of its extraction in the production of white table sugar. The great variability of agroecological factors that directly affect root yield and quality are possible good agrotechnics, primar… Show more

“…As reported by Varga et al (2022), the application of N fertilizer can increase the sugarbeet root yield; they note, however, that a linear model had a negative trendline for the sugar concentration. This was not the case in our trial.…”

“…Sugar yield (ERS) is typically linearly related to biomass production and N uptake (Varga et al, 2022). However, Last et al (1983) has shown that N rates above 200 kg N ha −1 did not increase sugar yield; in fact, sugar yield was maximized with 125 kg N ha −1 rate.…”

“…Sugar beet ( Beta vulgaris L.) is a biennial heterogeneous pollinated crop, which is important in sugar production and non- food energy supply [ 28 , 29 ]. Nitrogen is the most important nutrient limiting factor to sugar beet, which growth and taproot development directly related to N level in surrounding environment [ 30 ]. It was found that N deficiency led to low yields, but too much N reduced root quality in sugar beet [ 31 , 32 ].…”

“…Based on research conducted by the Amalgamated Sugar Company and the University of Idaho, it is typically recommended that growers apply all N preplant to ensure N is available to the crop by the six‐leaf growth stage. On the other hand, literature review has shown that sugarbeet crop need for N is at peak during the time of most intensive leaf growth during June–July (Varga et al., 2022). Some researchers found that N deficiency in sugarbeets could be corrected by topdressing N in June (Gilbert et al., 1981) without yield losses.…”
