Efficacy, safety and palatability of a new broad‐spectrum anthelmintic formulation in dogs

Abstract: The efficacy, safety and palatability of a new flavoured chewable anthelmintic tablet were investigated in dogs. The efficacy, based on worm counts, of a single recommended therapeutic dose (RTD) of 5 mg pyrantel + 20 mg oxantel + 5 mg praziquantel/kg bodyweight was assessed in experimental infections (EI) and natural infections (NI) with Trichuris vulpis, Echinococcus granulosus and Toxocara canis. For T vulpis, the efficacy of the treatment was 99.3 per cent in EI (comparing groups of six treated and six con… Show more

“…A multi-centric investigation indicated that the combination of febantel, pyrantel and praziquantel has an efficacy of ~99.9% against canine T. canis and hookworms [133]. Another recent study has demonstrated the efficacy and safety of tablets containing pyrantel, oxantel, and praziquantel against natural and/or experimental infections by T. canis A. caninum and other canine endoparasites [134]. In cats an association containing pyrantel and praziquantel has high efficacy against ascarids and ancylostomatids [133,135].…”

“…For instance, good compliance (i.e. 87.5%) of the owned pets treated with oral tablets containing pyrantel/oxantel/praziquantel has been documented [134] and, analogously, practices across Europe have reported a high acceptance by dogs treated with the oral tablets containing emodepside [141]. The oral suspension containing emodepside and toltrazuril has an acceptance rated as good and medium in 90% and 9% respectively, in dogs treated in the multi-center study mentioned above [143] and high palatability when administered in cats [144].…”

“…Pyrantel was first introduced in the 1970's, and it continues to be used today alone and in combination products. Therefore, the efficacy of pyrantel against canine ascarids is well-established at 5 mg/kg, and more recent publications suggest that its effectiveness has not changed since it was first introduced [7,8]. Moxidectin, a macrocyclic lactone of the milbemycin group, at a high dosage (2.5 mg/kg) is also approved in a topical spot-on (in combination with imidacloprid) for the treatment of a wide range of gastrointestinal and extra-gastrointestinal nematode infections in dogs [9].…”

“…), hookworms (Ancylostoma caninum, Uncinaria stenocephala), whipworms (Trichuris vulpis) and tapeworms (Echinococcus granulosus, Echinococcus multilocularis, Dipylidium caninum) are important helminths of dogs in terms of prevalence and pathogenecity, with significant zoonotoxic impact in certain cases (Echinococcus spp., Toxocara spp. ; Schmid et al, 2010;Barutzki and Schaper, 2011). Since the spectrum of activity of individual anthelmintic drugs is mostly limited, combination products containing at least an anticestodal and an antinematodal compound are required to control mixed helminthic infections effectively.…”
