“…Furthermore, studies in zebra fish, Danio rerio, demonstrated that some probiotics, for example Lactobacillus rhamnosus, could modulate the transcription of genes related to the differentiation and maturation of some tissues, thereby enhancing the growth of the animals(Avella et al, 2012;Gioacchini et al, 2011;Maradonna et al, 2013).The immune indices, including phagocytic activities and RBs activity, and the enzyme activity of PO, CAT, ACP and NOS were all significantly higher in all dietary B. pumilus groups than in the control group, and a higher survival rate was induced by dietary B. pumilus.Similar results have been observed in M. rosenbergii fed with other probiotics, such as Vibrio NE17(Rahiman, Jesmi, Thomas, & Hatha, 2010), Bacillus licheniformis(Kumar et al, 2013) and L. plantarum(Dash et al, 2016). A significant increase in immune indices caused by dietary B. pumilus was also reported in Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus)(Srisapoome & Areechon, 2017) and striped catfish (Pangasianodon hypophthalmus)(Truong Thy et al, 2017).Hemocytes play a vital role in phagocytosis, nodule formation, encapsulation, hemocyte clumping, production of microbicidal compounds, mediation of cytotoxicity and so on(Johansson, Keyser, Sritunyalucksana, & Söderhäll, 2000;Smith, Brown, & Hauton, 2003), all of which have been proven to be an important part of the innate immunity of crustaceans. THC was not affected by dietary B. pumilus in the present study, which was not consistent with the results found inDash et al (2016), in which the THC of M. rosenbergii was increased by L. plantarum doses of 1 × 10 8 and 1 × 10 9 CFU/g diet.However, other indices associated with hemocytes, for example phagocytic activities, RBs activity and immune enzyme activity, were all enhanced by dietary B. pumilus.…”

The present study was conducted to investigate the effects of Bacillus pumilus on the growth performance, innate immunity and digestive enzymes of the giant freshwater prawn, Macrobrachium rosenbergii. Prawns (mean weight: 1.81 ± 0.01 g) were fed different levels of B. pumilus at doses of 0, 1 × 107, 1 × 108 and 1 × 109 CFU/g to produce one control group and three experimental groups (G1, G2 and G3), respectively. After a 60‐day experimental feeding period, the results showed that the final weight, weight gain rate (WGR) and specific growth rate (SGR) were significantly higher in experimental groups than in the control (p < 0.05), whereas these improvements did not differ significantly (p > 0.05) among experimental groups. The improvements in phagocytic activity, respiratory burst (RBs) activity and the activity of catalase (CAT), nitric oxide synthase (NOS) and acid phosphatase (ACP) were significantly higher in G2 and G3 than in the control and G1 (p < 0.05). Further, the activity of CAT, NOS and ACP significantly increased with an increase in the dietary level of B. pumilus (p < 0.05). The activity of phenoloxidase (PO) in G3 was significantly higher than that in the control (p < 0.05). The activity of amylase was significantly higher in the groups G2 and G3 than that in the control group. G3 improved the activity of protease compared with the control (p < 0.05). In conclusion, the results of this study indicated that the potential use of B. pumilusat a dose of 1 × 108 CFU/g feed could improve the growth, immunity and digestive enzymes of M. rosenbergii.

The aim of this study was to assess the impact of a commercial probiotic, Sanolife PRO‐F, on water quality, growth performance, blood profiles and intestinal morphometry of monosex Nile tilapia. A field trial was conducted for 10 weeks in which tilapia fingerlings (20 ± 1.26 g) were randomly distributed into three replicate ponds which were subdivided into three treatment groups, receiving Sanolife PRO‐F at 0 (B0), 0.1 (B1) and 0.2 (B2) g/kg diet, respectively. The results showed a significant improvement in growth performance, feed conversion ratio and blood profiles in tilapia fed on treated diets. The whole intestinal lengths, anterior and terminal intestinal villi heights and anterior goblet cells count were greater in tilapia fed on treated diets. There were no noticeable differences in growth and intestinal morphology between tilapia fed on B1 and B2 diets. The ammonia concentration in water was lower with B1 diet while electric conductivity, salinity and total dissolved solids were higher with the B2 diet. The pH level of pond water was enhanced by both diets, B1 and B2. In conclusion, application of Sanolife PRO‐F at 0.1–0.2 g/kg diet might have beneficial effects on growth, immunity, stress responses and gut health and function as well as the water quality of farmed Nile tilapia.

Tilapia culture is a very promising industry within the aquaculture sector. However, disease outbreaks have continued to threaten the industry, causing serious economic losses among the producers. Streptococcosis has become the major bacterial disease affecting tilapia production in most regions of the world. To combat the disease and minimize its economic impact on fish producers, numerous preventive and control measures have been developed and reported over the years. This paper aims to systematically review the measures that could be used to manage the disease outbreaks and maintain fish health based on previously published scientific studies. Although numerous measures currently available have been highlighted, it is far better for the producers to maximize the preventive measures for management to be economically feasible. Among the currently available preventive measures, the use of vaccines has been shown to have the most promise, while the use of herbs has been demonstrated to be a more sustainable and economically affordable control measure. However, there are still a number of important gaps in existing literature that require further investigation. Overall, significant progress has been made in preventing and controlling streptococcosis in tilapia although, no single effective measure has been identified. Therefore, a combination of these measures may provide a more effective result.
