Efficacy of Two Tests in Differentiae Ing Potentially Low from Average and High First Grade Achievers

Two kindergarten teachers were asked to rate the reading readiness potential of their students ( N = 63). The following school year, the Gates-MacGinitie Tests were administered. Mental age, as measured by the SRA Primary Mental Abilities Test was a better predictor on 6 of the 7 readiness subtests. When mental age was partialled out, little correlation remained between reading readiness and the teachers' ratings.
