Efficacy of transrectal ultrasound in assessing endometrium of postmenopausal women with axial uterus

Abstract

What are the novel findings of this work?In postmenopausal women with an axial uterus, transrectal ultrasound (TRS) is more effective compared with transvaginal ultrasound (TVS) in achieving the optimal angle of insonation relative to the endometrium, resulting in fewer unsatisfactory examinations, significantly lower measurements of endometrial thickness and improved detection of endometrial abnormalities. What are the clinical implications of this work?TRS may reduce the need for invasive tests in women with an unsatisfactory endometrial assessment on TVS. More research is needed to confirm the improved accuracy of TRS over TVS for the diagnosis of endometrial cancer in women with postmenopausal bleeding and an axial uterus.
