Periodontitis is one of the most common recurring diseases in the oral cavity and is marked by the destruction of connective tissue and alveolar bone support which provokes an inflammatory host response following infection by periodontal microorganisms. Periodontal diseases have greater importance in public health globally due to increased prevalence rates and distinguishable social impact on oral health. The aim of this present study is to assess the risk of periodontitis in children. This is a university setting study. One hundred children were randomly selected who reported to Saveetha Dental College. The factors which were assessed are periodontal status, medical condition and oral hygiene status of the children and compared. Out of 100 children, 54% were males and 46% were females. Periodontal disease was present in 17% of the study population. There was a positive correlation between periodontal disease and oral hygiene index. Oral hygiene was compromised in children with periodontitis when compared with other children (p=0.001). No significant association was found between periodontal status and medical condition (p>0.05). Within the limits of the present study, it is observed that periodontal disease has a strong association with the oral hygiene of the children.

A BSTRACT Background: Oral xylitol products have been labeled as a caries preventive measure; however, their use is still limited. This study aims to summarize the evidence on the effectiveness of xylitol-containing products in dental caries prevention with a focus on dental caries as the primary outcome rather than other pseudo outcomes. Materials and Methods: A structured literature search was conducted to identify the studies related to the efficiency of products containing xylitol for the prevention of caries. The literature search was conducted through the following databases: Medline, PubMed (Central), SCOPUS, Web of Science (WoS), Open Grey, and the Cochrane Library and included papers published between 1966 and March 2020. Fixed- and random-effect models were used to obtain pooled estimates through meta-analysis. Results: Evidence-based results of this study showed that xylitol is easily available in the form of various products, but clinically tested products are few in markets. The literature review has also concluded that the most effective xylitol product in caries prevention was (100%) xylitol, chewed or consumed three to five times per day, after meals with a total dose of 5–10 g of xylitol per day. Products included xylitol-containing lozenges, candies, and chewing gum, foods based on xylitol, and xylitol-containing toothpaste and mouth rinse. Results showed that xylitol-containing products significantly prevented caries compared with the other (control) non-xylitol products. Pooled estimates using the combined fixed and random effects of standardized mean difference were −0.099 [95% confidence interval (CI): −0.149, −0.049] and −0.089 (95% CI: −2.04, 0.026), respectively. Conclusion: This review concluded that xylitol should be part of an overall strategy to decrease and prevent dental caries. Dosage and frequency should be considered strictly when prescribing xylitol as a caries preventive measure.

Background: Effective plaque control is important to prevent gingival and periodontal diseases. In recent years, Olive oil and Ozonated olive oil are gaining paramount importance in dentistry because of its minimal side effects as compared to chemical agents. Aim: To assess the effect of olive oil, ozonated olive oil, and chlorhexidine mouthwash on oral health status of patients with gingivitis. Materials and Methods: The present double blinded, parallel designed, randomized clinical trial was carried out among 66 gingivitis patients in the Department of Periodontics, Saveetha Dental College and Hospitals, Chennai, India. Participants were assigned to three groups: 22 participants in each group [Group A (CHX mouthwash), Group B (OOO - Ozonated olive oil) and Group C (OO - olive oil)]. Complete ultrasonic scaling was done and subjects were asked not to use any oral hygiene aids and recalled after three days and the gingival index and OHI(S) were noted (baseline). Then subjects were provided with respective mouthwash and instructed to use them for 15 days. Again, gingival index and OHI(S) were noted after 15 days. The data was analyzed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS Software, Version 23.0). One-way ANOVA was used to compare the mean values of gingival index between the groups. Tukey’s HSD post hoc test was done to find means that are significantly different from each other.Also, student’s paired t-test was used to compare the mean values of gingival index within the groups. Results: A statistically significant difference was obtained between group A and C (p=0.000) and between Group B and C (p=0.000). However, there was a non-significant difference between mouthwash A and B (p>0.05) showing that OOO and chlorhexidine mouthwashes were equally effective in reducing gingivitis. Conclusion: The present study suggests that efficacy of OOO was equally effective in reducing plaque and gingivitis as compared to chlorhexidine mouthwash. Therefore, oil pulling using OOO can be a better alternative to chlorhexidine mouthwash.
