Efficacy of the Accent Method of Voice Therapy on Acoustic Measurements, in Hyperfunctional Dysphonic Patients

Abstract: Background:The accent method (AM) of voice therapy is one of the holistic approaches for behavior readjustment technique (BRAT). Anatomic physiologic explanation for the accent method is the rhythmic pairing of timing with respiration and phonation which may promote motor learning of new phonatory behaviors that will enhance the Bernoulli's effect to restore the glottic wave. Hyperfunctional voice disorder is a non-physiological increase in tone of the vocal folds on phonation.

“…It encompasses abdominal breathing with open throat posture and easy phonation, in a rhythmic fashion, together with specific body movements. These combined mechanisms produce accentuated rhythmic expiratory support that helps to improve the Bernoulli Effect at the glottis [6] . In clinical practice, voice therapy is often recommended in patients with lesions of small dimensions such as vocal fold nodules.…”

“…The Accent Method (AM) has been widely applied to improve suprasegmental characteristics through changes in properties, such as fundamental frequency and intensity (Murdoch and Theodoros, 1998;Khidr, 2003;Shiromoto, 2003;Zsiga, 2012;Bassiouny et al, 2019;Othman et al, 2021). AM should be done within one breath using a specific rhythm.…”
