2009. Simulated mesotrione drift followed by glyphosate, imazethapyr, bentazon or glyphosate plus chlorimuron in soybean. Can. J. Plant Sci. 89: 265Á272. There have been anecdotal accounts of increased crop sensitivity due to herbicide drift followed by an in-crop herbicide. An experiment was conducted from 2005 to 2007 at Elora, Ridgetown, and Woodstock, Ontario, to determine the effects of simulated mesotrione drift followed by in-crop applications of glyphosate, imazethapyr, bentazon and glyphosate plus chlorimuron on glyphosate-resistant soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] visual injury, plant height, plant density, shoot dry weight, and seed yield. As the rate of simulated mesotrione drift increased, there was an increase in soybean injury and a decrease in shoot dry weight, height, and yield. Simulated mesotrione drift followed by bentazon resulted in synergistic responses in injury shortly after application in some environments. This increase in injury was transient, with no synergistic responses in density, shoot dry weight, and yield. In contrast, antagonistic responses were observed when glyphosate, imazethapyr, or glyphosate plus chlorimuron were applied after simulated mesotrione drift in some environments. La hausse des dommages estpassagè re, sans reáction synergique au niveau de la densite´dudensite´du peuplement, du poids sec des pousses et du rendement. Weeds for a long time coexist with cultivated plants in agrophytocenoses and can be considered as indicators of biodiversity. From the phytocenotic viewpoint, the existence and persistence of weeds are quite natural, but for economic reasons weeds are negative factors because of their competition with cultivated plants (crops) for water, nutrients, and living space. The strategic task of crop protection is the control of weeds at the economic threshold of harm. Under modern conditions, the use of integrated crop protection technologies, which involve combining and harmonizing crop rotation schemes, agrotechnics and chemical protection means, becomes of particular importance. The article discusses the issues related to the need for integrated application of several active ingredients of herbicides, which complement each other by their spectrum of action, improve the effectiveness of weed control, and prevent the emergence of resistance of weeds to specific herbicides. The basic regularities of the changes of selective phytotoxicity in complexes of herbicides with different mechanisms of their action, which were established in the course of researche, became the basis for development of various effective herbicidal complexes and mixtures for protection of various crops. According to the current strategy, the application of integrated crop protection systems should ensure the maintenance or reduction of potential infestation with weeds during rotation of crops. At that, the weed species composition in agrophytocenoses should not undergo abrupt changes, except for a significant reduction of the potential contamination by especially harmful weedy species.

Selecting a preemergence (PRE) and postemergence (POST) herbicide program that has the greatest efficacy can be difficult for corn producers and is highly dependent on weed spectrum. Weather conditions before and after herbicide application can further complicate decisions because they influence herbicide efficacy. Eleven field trials were conducted at three locations in Southwestern Ontario from 2003 to 2006, to determine the most effective PRE and POST corn herbicides for weed control. The most abundant weed species across all locations were redroot pigweed (Amaranthus retroflexus L.), common ragweed (Ambrosia artemisiifolia L.), common lambsquarters (Chenopodium album L.), and green foxtail (Setaria viridis (L.) Beauv.). Nine PRE herbicide treatments and eleven POST (applied at the 3 -4 leaf stage of corn) herbicide treatments were tested. Results from this study suggest that the timing and amount of precipitation influence herbicide efficacy. For example, precipitation levels 0 -17 mm within seven days after herbicide application (PRE or POST) provided unacceptable weed control in treatments that included atrazine, dimethenamid-p, isoxaflutole/atrazine or S-metolachlor/benoxacor. Cumulative precipitation during the 14 days after PRE application that exceeded the monthly average (by at least 64%) reduced Setaria viridis control with pendimethalin. This study demonstrates that a better understanding of how environmental conditions, especially precipitation affect herbicide efficacy, need to be considered by growers when selecting a corn herbicide program to reduce the possibility of weed control failure.
