Efficacy of Submucosal Sodium Tetradecyl Sulfate in the Soft Palate as a Treatment of the Mild Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome: A Pilot Study

Abstract: Background. As described by Mair et al. in 2001, snoreplasty, the application of sclerosant agents in the palate is a promising and cheap alternative to treat snoring. We decided to try this kind of therapy for the management of mild sleep apnea. Study Design. Experimental, longitudinal, prospective, nonrandomized, self-controlled pilot study. Methods. 11 patients were included, all of them with a polysomnographic study showing an Apnea-Hypopnea Index (AHI) from 5 to 20, and with a Müller maneuver showing only… Show more

“…Recently Labra et al have done a pilot study using Polidocanol as submucosal injection in the soft palate in patients with mild obstructive sleep apnea syndrome to treat snoring. 17 They have found good results in OSAS patients as well thereby increasing the scope of this sclerotherapy in OSAS also.…”

“…Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) diagnosis is a complex issue in sleep medicine, and it should always include its common symptoms: snoring, excessive daytime somnolence, asthenia, poor work performance, the history of stroke or arterial hypertension and a polysomnography. Its treatment is complex as well; it may include surgery or medical approaches, being the use of continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) the gold standard 1 .…”

“…Many studies have appeared in the last 15–20 years on the efficacy of these stronger agents in soft tissue (including knee ligaments,12–14 elbow ligaments,15–18 shoulder rotator cuff insertions,19 fauces (for snoring and obstructive sleep apnoea)20 21 and dislocating temporomandibular joints (TMJ)) 22. Our clinic gave up on dextrose many years ago, even as a back-up for those with allergies to stronger agents, due to its lack of efficacy.…”
