Efficacy of recreational hunters and marksmen for host culling to combat chronic wasting disease in reindeer

Abstract: Most populations of large mammals in developed countries are managed by human hunting, but there are surprisingly few empirical studies about the benefits and limitations of using recreational hunters to achieve specific management objectives. In particular, the extensive host culling required to markedly reduce population densities to combat some wildlife diseases may conflict with the management aims of landowners and hunters. This is particularly acute in the case of chronic wasting disease (CWD) in cervids… Show more

“…The sharpshooter program in Illinois has been successful in limiting CWD 57,58 , but it has led to a continued high level of conflict 59 . In Norway, marksmen were used for additional culling in Nordfjella, but similarly to the USA, these actions cause conflicts with local stakeholders 60 . To design hunting regimes that could be implemented practically while increasing the harvest offtake, local stakeholders were involved with epidemiologists at the Norwegian Veterinary Institute who were more systematically explaining data and logic of the model, which has been termed participatory modeling 61 .…”

“…There was a marked difference in reindeer movement between day and night during the hunting season. This was partly due to that hunting was only legal during day time (07:00–19:00) due to a locally imposed ban allowing reindeer time to forage (Mysterud, Strand, et al, 2019). The marksmen did not have similar restrictions, but an average of only 7 hr of daylight during winter limited the time they could spend culling; reindeer increased their movement during daytime throughout this period.…”

“…Further, the hunt of 2017 involved more hunters and much larger quotas (Mysterud, Strand, et al, 2019). Nevertheless, the movements during the first period of excessive hunting in 2017, overlapping with the ordinary hunting season, were similar.…”
