Efficacy of Propolis on the Denture Stomatitis Treatment in Older Adults: A Multicentric Randomized Trial

Abstract: Our hypothesis tested the efficacy and safety of a mucoadhesive oral gel formulation of Brazilian propolis extract compared to miconazole oral gel for the treatment of denture stomatitis due to Candida spp. infection in older adults. Forty patients were randomly allocated in a noninferiority clinical trial into two groups. The control group (MIC) received 20 mg/g miconazole oral gel and the study group (PROP) received mucoadhesive formulation containing standardized extract of 2% (20 mg/g) propolis (EPP-AF®) d… Show more

“…In addition to the abovementioned T2DM, there was an improvement in the cognitive pattern in patients with Alzheimer's disease, associated with a reduction in inflammatory markers [ 4 ]. Clinical trials have shown the efficacy of propolis in the treatment of oral diseases associated with herpesvirus type I [ 34 ] and others, such as prosthetic stomatitis [ 35 ], recurrent cold sore [ 36 ], and periodontal disease, and the reduction of oxidative stress was shown in this last study [ 37 ]. Regarding EPP-AF®, a clinical trial with chronic renal patients with proteinuria showed a reduction in monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP-1), which is a marker of inflammation and proteinuria intensity [ 38 ].…”

“…High antifungal potential of propolis collected in Brazil was also revealed by other authors [ 16 , 17 , 18 ]. In addition, the groups of Santos [ 19 , 20 ] and Pina [ 21 ] successfully treated oral candidiasis with extracts of Brazilian propolis. Haghdoost reported activity of Iran propolis for which MIC and MFC values against C. albicans isolates were 360.6 μg/mL and 1250.1 μg/mL, respectively [ 22 ].…”

“…There are few clinical studies in humans on the efficacy of extracts from Brazilian plants in the treatment of oral candidiasis. More recently, human effectiveness of Brazilian green propolis derived from B. dracunculifolia on plaque control and gingivitis [49] for the prevention and control of oral mucositis and candidiasis [147,148] and compared green propolis gel with benzydamine hydrochloride in cancer patients and irradiated in the head and neck regions [149]. Also, the Brazilian red propolis, derived from D. ecastaphyllum, both extract and gel, inhibited C. albicans in vitro, periodontopathogenic bacteria in vitro and in vivo, besides controlling periodontitis in rats [150].…”
