Efficacy of probiotics in non‐alcoholic fatty liver disease in adult and children: A meta‐analysis of randomized controlled trials

Abstract: Probiotics provided improvements in the outcomes of homeostasis model assessment, total cholesterol, high density lipoprotein, and tumor necrosis factor-α in any NAFLD patients and triglyceride in Italian and Spanish patients, but no improvement in the outcomes of BMI, glucose, or insulin in adult NAFLD patients. The currently available data are not sufficient to compare the effects of probiotics between adult and childhood NAFLD patients.

“…In contrast, Ipar et al (28) found significant improvement only in TC and LDL levels and not in TG levels after synbiotic supplementation, as in our study. Effects of probiotics or synbiotics on TG levels have some controversies; Gao et al (26) revealed that lipid-lowering effect of probiotics or synbiotics may vary in different countries/ethnicities. Additionally, types of the strain in probiotics, types of the prebiotics used for the study, and the duration of the treatment may affect lipidlowering property (29,30).…”

“…In another study, probiotic supplementation in pediatric obesity-related liver disease for 8 weeks decreased ALT serum level (27). Also, a meta analysis study in 2016 reviewed efficacy of probiotics in nonalcoholic fatty liver disease in adult and children, in which a total of 9 clinical trial studies were included and reported significant differences in ALT, AST, and BMI between the 2 childhood groups (28).…”

“…Multiple studies have examined the use of probiotics alone or in conjunction with prebiotics in the treatment of NAFLD/NASH with some beneficial effects. One meta‐analysis examined 9 randomized controlled trials of probiotic use in 535 patients of NAFLD/NASH involving both adults and children; treatment duration varied from 4 weeks to 6 months . The authors found that although probiotics did not reduce body mass index, insulin, or glucose levels, there was a decrease in insulin resistance, total cholesterol, triglyceride, and tumor necrosis factor α (TNF‐α) levels.…”
