Efficacy of probiotic treatment with Bifidobacterium longum 536 for induction of remission in active ulcerative colitis: A randomized, double‐blinded, placebo‐controlled multicenter trial

Abstract: Supplementation with BB536 was well tolerated and reduced UCDAI scores, EI and Mayo subscores after 8 weeks in Japanese patients with mild to moderately active UC.

There were eight trials studying the efficacy of probiotics in inducing remission in active UC, 16,18,25,[44][45][46][47][48] six studying their efficacy in preventing relapse of quiescent UC, 17,19,23,[49][50][51] two studying the efficacy of probiotics in inducing remission in active CD, 52,53 two studying their efficacy in preventing relapse of quiescent CD, 24,55 and four studying their efficacy in preventing relapse of CD in remission following a surgical resection. [20][21][22]54 None of the RCTs were cross-over trials.…”

“…One of the eight eligible trials compared probiotics with 5-ASAs for induction of remission of active UC, 44 and the other seven trials were placebo-controlled. 16,18,25,[45][46][47][48] Two trials were at low risk of bias. 25 Detailed study characteristics are provided in Figure 1).…”

“…Recently, probiotic therapy has been demonstrated to be potentially effective and safe in patients with UC. Tamaki et al, 2016 investigated the efficacy and safety of probiotic treatment with B. longum 536, which is a probiotic isolated in 1969 from the feces of a breast-fed infant, in Japanese patients with active UC using an RCT [62]. The probiotic improved clinical symptoms, such as the UC disease activity index and Rachmilewitz endoscopic index, in patients with mild to moderately active UC, but further studies are needed to clarify the efficacy and safety of B. longum 536 for UC [62].…”

“…More recently, a trial where patients with mild-to-moderate UC (UCDAI 3-9) were supplemented with B. longum subsp. longum 536 resulted in a significant decrease in disease activity following 8-week supplementation, whereas a significant decrease was not seen in the placebo group [84]. Taken together, these trials suggest that bifidobacteria may be a promising therapy for the treatment of IBD; however, the limitations of the studies must be considered.…”
