Efficacy of Praziquantel During the Incubation and Invasive Phase of Schistosoma Haematobium Schistosomiasis in 18 Travelers

Abstract: The efficacy of praziquantel started during the incubation period of schistosomiasis has not been studied. Eighteen tourists were infected by Schistosoma haematobium during summer 2003 after bathing once in the same cascade in Mali. We observed the efficacy of praziquantel given at different phases. They received praziquantel at the first consultation, from Days 10 to 15 after exposure in eight asymptomatic patients (Group 1), from Days 28 to 40 in 4 asymptomatic patients (Group 2), and from Days 20 to 39 in 6… Show more

“…Physicians should also be reminded that the pre-patent period of the infection, during which serological tests are still negative, may last for more than three months [11] and that seroconversion such as assessed by Western blot could be delayed when compared with the results provided by ELISA or IHA screening tests.…”

“…No adverse reactions were recorded in any case. This is in contrast to other series and may reflect either use of a lower dose of praziquantel or failure to report or record adverse reactions 6,9,[11][12][13] ; only nine were prescribed steroids, which may have been caused by the relatively mild nature of the symptoms experienced by this cohort of patients.Over half were seen for follow-up and 41% of these were given a second dose of praziquantel to treat any residual schistosomes. Forty-six did not receive a second dose of praziquantel, mainly because they did not attend.…”

“…Praziquantel is not effective during AS and, as described in our second patient, is associated with worsening of signs and symptoms in 40% of cases. 17 In addition, praziquantel does not prevent the chronic phase of the disease. 17,18 Instead, corticosteroids are the recommended treatment of severe complications occurring during AS.…”
